Lab 5.1.4 Gram Staining
Gram Staining
This technique requires knowing how to use crystal violet, iodine, and saffron to dye bacteria and preform the test. Also, this test is used to determine whether or not the bacteria is gram negative or gram positive. The results determine whether or not the bacteria can be treated with antibiotics. If it is gram positive (purple) is harder to treat with antibiotics because it has a thicker cell wall. Gram negative (pink) has a thinner cell wall and is easily treated with antibiotics. Gram staining is an important technique in the biomedical science field because it is essential to identify different bacteria.
