Lab 2.1.1: Diagnosing Diabetes
Insulin Tolerance Testing
Insulin tolerance testing helps determine what type of Diabetes a person may have or if they have Diabetes at all. This test measures how much insulin is in the blood stream which determines whether the insulin is entering the cells. If someone has type 1 Diabetes then they would not have any insulin in the bloodstream because the body would not be producing any. If the person has type 2 Diabetes then insulin in the bloodstream would rise and not go back to normal because the insulin wouldn't be entering the cells. A person without Diabetes insulin levels would rise for a short period of time and then go back down to normal. This is an important skill in the biomedical community because it helps determine what kind of Diabetes a person may have had and whether or not it effected a person's death.
