Sickle-Shaped Red Blood Cells
Before I started taking Biomedical Sciences I did not knowwhat Sickel Cell Anemia was or how someone's blood is because of the disease. I learned that sickle-shaped red blood cells decrease the amount of oxygen that is able to reach body tissues. This happens because of the crescent shape of the red blood cell from the changing of the shape of the hemoglobin inside the cell. The chemical structure changes from Glutamic Acid to Valine which then causes the hemoglobin to get sticky within the cell, therefore causing its sickled shape. Healthy red blood cells carry oxygen smoothly through the body and to body tissues. Sickled red blood cells can't move completely through the body and clump because the crescent shape doesn't allow the red blood cells to move smoothly through the veins and arteries. This causes a person with Sickle Cell Anemia to have many different problems and their body doesn't receive enough oxygen because the red blood cells clump together.
